About the Course
This course is perfectly suited to individuals working in care homes, as it provides a foundation level understanding of medication. Upon completion of the course, participants will have an understanding of the practical requirements for administering medication, as well as the legislation surrounding medication.
Completion of this course gives participants a certificate which is valid for three years. Successful candidates will have a thorough knowledge of the concerns and issues surrounding medication, and will have the necessary level of understanding to work with the administration of medication in care homes.
Introduction to medication, including how to recognise different types of common medications
Considerations relevant to safe receipt, storage, and dispensing practices
Documentation, and the importance of detailed and accurate record keeping
The importance of confidentiality relating to all documentation
Practical administration of medication, including specific techniques and communication skills
Reducing and eliminating medication errors – why it is important, and how to ensure such errors are minimised
Accountability, roles, and responsibilities in the care home environment
Relevant legislation and statutory requirements
Understanding patient rights with regard to management of medication
Awareness of regulating bodies and their roles
